Spiced Brown Rice, Barley and Spelt

Did I ever tell you that I love my rice cooker? Yup, I am not ashamed of this love affair either. Before my rice cooker, I used to make rice on the stovetop and would get carried away with things and almost always end up with burned rice. My husband used to say I could master the most complicated dishes but I would massacre the simplest of them all:  rice.
Then one day, I was walking through the aisles of Walmart, aimlessly, and lo and behold, I found a rice cooker. I had never seen one before.
And it was only 19.99$
Only at Walmart.
So I bought it thinking for 20 bucks, it’s worth a shot not to hear my husband complain about burned rice anymore.
I’m proud to say that my husband is no longer an abused man. He can enjoy his beloved rice without the foul taste of burnt in his mouth. That rice cooker saves me so much time, I wish I knew about it sooner.
If you don’t have one, go and buy one because it is worth every penny.


1 bag 400g brown rice with barley and spelt
generous pinch of salt
generous pinch of white pepper
1 tbsp. ground turmeric
1 tbsp. chicken consomme
1/4 c. golden raisins


Open the lid of your rice cooker.
Throw in all ingredients listed above and mix. Water should come up about 1 inch over rice, barley and spelt.
Close lid and turn on.

I told you that was easy, fancy-pants ;)

    I am not a rice lover, because there is never enough flavour. But this recipe is packed with flavour.
