100% Whole Wheat Pizza Dough

Believe it or not, many, if not most, whole wheat pizza doughs are not 100% whole wheat. They will often include white flour AND sugar in the recipe.

If you want a 100% whole wheat healthy pizza dough recipe, here it is.

To bake my pizza, I use a portable pizza oven I bought at William Sonoma for about 125$CAD. Totally worth the price considering I make quick and healthy pizzas for my family once a week. It has a stone inside which delivers a beautiful crust and it cooks in half the time of the oven. Perfecto!

Ingredients

1 1/2 c. warm water ( you want it to be around 100 degrees)

1 tbsp. active dry yeast

1 tsp. organic honey

1 tbsp. olive oil

1 tsp. salt

3 1/4 c. organic whole wheat flour

2 tsp. Italian seasoning

 

Any toppings of your choice. I chose:

-Mushrooms

-Roasted red peppers

-Onions

-Low fat mozzarella cheese, shredded (I also use fresh mozzarella cheese but my kids don’t like it as much)

Instructions

Take out a large bowl and put in the water. Stir in the honey.

Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it stand until it gets foamy, about 12 minutes or so.

Next you want to add the oil, Italian seasoning and salt and mix it all together.

Slowly stir in the flour until the dough starts coming together. Once you can not easily stir anymore, flip the dough out onto a lightly floured surface to knead.

Knead for about 12 minutes until the dough is smooth.

Place dough in an oiled bowl and cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

After 1 hour, remove the dough and divide into 2 balls.

Cover both balls with plastic wrap on the counter and let rise again for 45 minutes. If not using both balls, you can easily freeze the second ball up to 4 months.

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees or use a pizza maker like my Breville:

Roll out dough into a rectangle or circle and place on pizza stone. Pizza stones do not require any added grease. If you are using a pizza pan, you will have to add grease. Top with your favourite toppings and bake for about 20 minutes. If using the pizza maker like the one I have in the pictures, place stone directly in the machine and bake for 10 minutes.
